What Ma Yueh Liang said about Peng Posted by Jim Criscimagna With all the discussion about peng, I thought some of you might enjoy reading what Ma Yueh Liang and Zee Wen wrote about the subject in their book, Wu Style Tai Chi Chuan Push-Hands (Tuishou)-- Shanghai Book Co, LTD, Hong Kong. I am quoting from page 15: "'Pung'(warding). It is the concealed strength because it is created mainly by feeling and craft and it can be barely discerned in the surface of the forms. It ranks first in the Thirteen Kinetic Movements, which indicates its importance. In tuishou practice, the learner is said to have crossed the threshold only when he has learned the meaning and method of warding." Down the page farther: "The strength and attempt of the opponent is seen, but one's own strength is kept hidden from him. That is why it is called the concealed force." A little farher down page 15 and on to page 16: "It has been described as an audible force, because you can detect the fine motions of your opponent as if through the sense of hearing, and you can thus make a rapid response for rapid attack and a slow response for a slow attack.
